Broadcasters use our airwaves for free — and in return are supposed to provide programming that fulfills community needs.
But broadcasters have stopped holding up their end of the bargain. And the situation is only getting worse. In recent years the media giants have shuttered newsrooms, laid off journalists and aired cookie-cutter programming often produced by their former competitors.
The FCC has just started to review its media ownership rules. These rules need to be strengthened to make room for more local ownership, increased competition and greater opportunities for women and people of color to own media outlets.
We need media for communities, not corporations. But the FCC won’t act in the public’s interest if we remain silent.
Free Press is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to reform the media. Through education, organizing and advocacy, we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media, quality journalism, and universal access to communications.
The Free Press Action Fund is member-supported. We don't take money from government, political parties or businesses. Member contributions fuel our work lobbying Congress and the FCC, filing lawsuits and legal complaints, and aggressively advocating for real changes in media policymaking that benefit the public.
