Values

The future of journalism will likely consist of diverse models, and we recognize the need for experimentation and innovation, now and in the future. No single policy option will single-handedly secure a bright future for American journalism. We need a menu of policies, adaptable to changing social and economic realities.

We have outlined six key public interest principles that should guide these policies.

  • PROTECT THE FIRST AMENDMENT. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to a free society and a functioning democracy.
  • PRODUCE QUALITY NEWS COVERAGE. To self-govern in a democratic society, the public needs in-depth reporting on local issues as well as national and international affairs that is accurate, credible and verifiable. Journalism should be animated by a multitude of voices and viewpoints.
  • PROVIDE CONTRASTING PERSPECTIVES. Reporting should hold the powerful accountable by scrutinizing the actions of government and corporations with healthy skepticism. Journalism should foster genuine debate about important issues.
  • PROMOTE PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY. Journalism should be responsive to the needs of local communities and citizens should real support to hold the media accountable. We need to reinvigorate the FCC’s role as advocates for the public interest, and foster media that not only informs, but also engages.
  • PRIORITIZE INNOVATION. Journalists should utilize new tools and technology to report and deliver the news. The public needs journalism that crosses traditional boundaries and is accessible to as many people as possible across platforms.

Free Press is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to reform the media. Through education, organizing and advocacy, we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media, quality journalism, and universal access to communications.
